Yet has no idea about feather-filling pillows. He writes blindly:- *"**Sri Ram was lying on the lap of Mata Sita and sleeping*. *Kakasura came in the form of a crow and scratched Mata Sita."* No. After some dalliance, Sri Raama was restive on his wife Seetha's lap when a crow noticed that one of Seetha's nipples were exposed and looked like a ripe cherry. The crow swooped down, pecked the exposed nipple and flew away. Seetha screamed. Sri Raama woke. Being unarmed, he plucked a nearby blade of darbha, and with unerring aim sent it against the crow. It pierced the crow through its head, making it totally blind. The crow realised its error, and begged Seetha for forgiveness. Sri Raama was adamant, but his wife persuaded him to show mercy. Sri Raama restored the vision in one of the crow's eyes. So, even today crows cock their heads to look. They cannot look straight. By the way, our ancient rishis used shaped blocks of wood as pillows. My grandfather had one of those. Others use their upper arms as pillows. " Sri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman were residing in the Chitrakuta Mountain during their exile period in the Ramayana. Kakasura, son of Indra, in the form of a crow was flying over the Chitrakuta and noticed the divine couple. Sri Ram was lying on the lap of Mata Sita and sleeping. Kakasura came in the form of a crow and scratched Mata Sita. The painful cry of Sita woke up Sri Ram. Bhagavan Sri Ram immediately realized that the crow was Kakasura. He took up a sharp blade of grass, infused into it the spell of Brahma and directed it at the crow. Fearing for his life, Kakasura flew all over the world. But the divine arrow followed him. Trimurtis, Devas and Saints could not save Kakasura. Finally, Kakasura took refuge at the feet of Sri Ram. Bhagvan Sri Ram said that the Brahmastra could never become futile so the arrow will hit the right eye of Kakasura. Accordingly, the arrow struck the right eye of Kakasura. So Pillows are unknown dasaratha time and Dridarashtra times. And imported idea of the Islam and the British. They are superior to cotton, sponge, rubber foam. Bolsters, or Dutch wives, are long round cylindrical pillows for wrapping one's round on cold days. Throw pillows are ornamental little cushions more for decoration than use, and set in corners of sofas and couches. There are no better pillows than one's own mother's lap. Nothing very serious or very informative in this posting. Gopalakrishnan 12-11-2022. *1 Why not lengthy pillows suitable for double cots or one and half cots?* We are having small pillows which can be used in trains. Still smaller ones are used for babies. Not only for supporting head of babies, but to keep on sides also, so that they will not fall down even from a bed on the ground. In hospitals for the attendant of an in- patient a small cot having slightly more width than a bench and a small pillow is provided. Though we are having double cots we are not normally getting pillows to that length. Probably if we order we could make. *Pillow is for the convenience of each person and keeping it in suitable position* depending on the person. Probably this could be the reason for providing separate pillows. *2. Normal size of pillows* Normally in shops selling such items like pillow, bed etc., we get two types of pillows. One is medium and another is large. We get suitable pillow covers also there. Though we get bed spreads and pillow covers in textile shops, pillows we have to go to merchants selling bed, cot, curtain cloth etc. There are exceptions. In Trivandrum Chalai there is a swamy’s shop where we get dhoti, pillow cover, towel and even needle and threads. *3. Material inside pillow**s* We get pillows filled with different materials like cotton, waste cotton, light sponge or foam. The best ones are filled with cotton, soft and best to use. A quality cotton pillow with good cover is comfortable to get sleep soon. They are priced high. Waste cotton filled is lesser priced and comfortable than sponge to many. Sponge filled and foam filled appears having more height and on use the height may get reduce. *4. Dirty filling cloth of the pillow.* In all types if we remove pillow cover, we can see the filling cloth appearing dirty. I have wondered what makes this filling cloth so dirty. We cannot take it leaving pillow material, because *refilling and stitching is a very difficult task.* Still I have no idea how they become so dirty while pillow cover appears good even on one week use*. It is not saliva from the mouth*. *Is it dead skin entering through pillow cover makes it so?* Recently in sponge pillows, I removed the dirty ones, filled the material in a pillow cover and stitched by hand. While there are sofa repair people coming in road. I have not found a single pillow repair man. I enquired the shop selling pillows. They answered, they too have only sofa repair. *5 Pillow covers from platform merchants.* When I came to Chennai, I purchased a few pillow covers from platform merchants. In fact still they are in use after 15 years. Platform merchants also sell quality items. *6. Hand stitching machine.* My son brought before years a hand stitching machine which comes on sale at Naptol etc. Probably it could help stitching easier with new container. I have not yet opened it. *7. Discarding old pillows.* Only way to dispose old pillows is burning now in Chennai. Waste collectors find the item too big. In Tambaram Corporation, now waste from home is daily collected, a fixed amount is collected along with house tax. In states like Kerala it may not be an imaginable thing to leave pillows in waste item. I understand those having some compound burn them. *8 Re- stitching tailors* There are few re-stitching tailors for clothes, bags. Umbrella and footwear have become use and throw item. So too pillows. Though heavily charged there are repair shops for foam beds changing outer cover damaged putting new cover and stitching end. *9 New beds* Whether compliment pillow with bed is given or not most shops give compliment pillow with bed. *It is believed bed should not be sold alone. It should be sold only with pillow* *10 Blowing with pillows* While I was studying in school, blowing with pillows between two was a game. Now no such games. *11. Guest pillows* Normally for guests best beds, bed spreads and pillows are kept separately. After guests depart, bed spreads, bed sheets and pillow covers are washed and kept. *12 My pillow* In homes each person has his own pillow/pillows. Most will not get sleep and feel discomfort, if their pillow is not there. *13. Other items as pillows* When one is very tired, pillow is not a problem. Or working in a place at night where work is not completed. *Many use plank as a substitute as pillow. Many cooks in catering use plank as pillow. * Spreading a thick cloth makes it a pillow. Those *installing telephone exchanges* use thick books like the telephone directory as pillow. They may wake up in middle and continue the work they were doing. They will sleep where the work is going on. Some having spondylitis are advised not to use pillow or bed and simply sleep on cot. Many use *air pillows* in train in sleeper class where bedspreads and pillow are not given. *14. Sofa cushion as pillow.* After sofas have become common, there could be very few who do not use sofa back cushion as pillow and watch TV and after a time relax or sleep in the lengthy sofa with sofa back cushion as pillow. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "iyer123" group.
