Q2         If a car is sold for 10 lakh rupeesfrom a showroom of the car, how
much profit does the showroom owner make?

A2          Prasanna Bhalerao, M. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune Sep 3

While I am notprivy to such infirmary such as dealer margin on cars, I can
hazard a guess. It is between 5% to 8%.For very high end luxury cars, large
premium SUVs, this might be as low as 3%–4%. It is well knownfact that dealers
don't make much money on car sales. Their profits come fromaftersales services.
Discounts, like corporare discount, promotion, exchangers, usually come from the
manufacturer's policy. The dealer discount isusually for non moving inventory
and is limited to the dealer's own margin.

Why do we get reminders and alerts that our car is duefor service, urgently in
need of service? Do theyreally care that our car should be in top notch
condition? Maybe, just maybe. They care about the revenue. There, they have
huge margins. If a new car is stripped down to the full lowest BOM level and
reach item issold at retail price of the part, one can easily earn 10 times the
car value. That kind of margin is on parts alone. Labour cost has no recommended
standardother than normal service. So, anything goes.

Q3         If the water in the oceans receded, could we walk from one continent
to another?

A3          Alfred Hand,Nov 8

There areapproximately 1375 million cubic km of water on the planet. The amount
of waterpresent is enormous. Soif we remove that much water, the Earth is a
gigantic desert, and the journeyfrom Europe to North America would be a very,
very long journey.

Actuallyno. You're unlikely to be able to cover that distance, even if you have
a caravanof provisions. Themid-Atlantic ridge would be a challenge to be
overcome. So unless youwere an experienced climber and could avoid placeswhere
lava would turn you to ash, you probably wouldn't have madethe trip a success

Q4         Who was the laziest person in thehistory of mankind?

A4          Steve Theodore, professional gamedeveloper, amateur know-it-all

I was told this story by a former Microsoft employee whoclaims to know it first
hand.

If you everinstalled Microsoft Windows in the 90's or early 2000's you probably
remember theinterminable wait which happened after the OS was installed and the
computerbooted up for the first time. The scads of little applications whichthe
OS included - the calculator, the calendar, notepad, and so on (which, let's
face it, hardly anybody ever actually used) had to initialize themselvesand
their registry settings for the first time . Each one was individuallytrivial,
but collectively this little ritual added a long time -- I remember it as being
30-40minutes, but perhaps my memory exaggerates - to the process of installing
a newcopy of windows.

My informant toldme that it would have been simple to include the initial files
with theWindows. He said, however, that this was not done because the person(s)
atMicrosoft who did the final build of Windows release candidates didn't
likewaiting thirty or forty minutes every time the release candidates were
builtand tested. So, they decided to save themselves half an hour a few times
duringthe release cycle by not including the settings....

...thereby sentencing every one of the tens of millionsof people who installed
Windows during that decade or so to an extra half anhour of waiting.

My guess is thatthis system affected something like 50 millions installations
of Windows. Athalf an hour apiece, that totals a bit more than 2,891 years of
wasting otherpeople's time - including leap years. It's the Great Pyramid of
time wasting, the Taj Mahal of using other people's precious moments on earth
like disposablehandi-wipes.

My note- When we installed the Indian technology CDOTtype telephone exchanges,
for executing commands, it tooklong time in minutes. So, we used to say, after
the command is given we can gofor tea with refreshment and return, the command
might have carried out. Laterpatches were installed one by one, commands
executed in time.

Now with Laptops with windows 10, by updating windows 11might have installed.
Some Lap top work perfectly, but some works very slow or held up, which require
some more hard wares. I have one Laptop working perfectly, another one, Ihave
to install additional parts, often get held up, CCTV display come in partsetc.

Q5         What are some amazing facts about theIndian Railways?

A5          Shivani 1y

Tunnel no.33 on Kalka-Shimla line, which is the longeststraight tunnel in the
world, is said to be haunted.Col. Barog was assigned the job of constructing
this tunnel, hiscalculations went wrong and caused the exchequer losses. He was
fined ₹1 for his mistake. He couldn’t bear this blot onhis professional career
so one day he took his dog on a walk in thistunnel and shot himself.

Post the deathof Col. Barog, Col. Harrington was entrusted with this job.He too
couldn’t complete the tunnel because of miscalculations. Finally, they sought
help from a spiritualist Baba Bhalku who told themexactly where and how to
proceed with the task, after which the job was complete. There is now a Baba
Bhalku rail museum near Shimlastation.

Barog station, named after Col. Barog, still to this dayhouses a cafeteria
place where the British women and folks would spend theirtime. They deemed it
to be the perfect place away from the hot plains of Punjaband from the harsh
cold of Shimla.

Kalka-Shimlahill railways still uses the British made equipment of passing
tokens to up anddown trains. Thereis a small metal ball (the “token”) which is
given to the loco pilot in-hand,acting as an approval signal to proceed to the
next station. It is also givento the loco pilot of the train coming from the
opposite direction; until thathappens, the trains cannot move. That is when
there is delay and longstoppages at certain stops as they are waiting to get
their tokens. Thisequipment is present at every station on the kalka-shimla
line and they say “Made in London”.

There are a pre-determined number of seats reserved forlast minute VIP
reservation requests from high placed govt. officials. If theseseats are
unclaimed they are then allotted to the general public on the waitinglist.

Ghum station whichcomes before Darjeeling is the highest station in India. It’s
a beautifulstation and is right on the road. If you have travelled in
Darjeeling HillRailways, you’ll know a lot of their stations and the route are
simply oncommon traffic roads.

Batasia loop on theDHR was not built for aesthetics. It was an engineering
requirement. From Ghumto Darjeeling, there is an approximate drop of 140ft and
a toy train cannothandle this sharp fall directly. The batasia loop is
considered as a great engineering feat. The train actually crosses the beginning
of the loop again on its exit from thetunnel.

My  note- I haveread the story about Mr Col barog long back in theinternet.

Q9         Are some IT companies doing layoffs inthe name of fake experience?

A9          Prasanna Bhalerao, M. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune Sat

All good companies, not just IT companies, are carryingout background checks.
They use 3rd party servicesfor the same who are experts at this. Based on the
report, the company will retain genuinepersons and fire the persons with fake
(even suspected fake) experience.

Of late, just postCOVID, many IT companies went into hiring spree expecting
high contracts. Thedemand surged and people were hired at high to very high
packages. I was alwaysa bit puzzled by the hiring spree of late and how people
are getting 75-100%hike. I even heard of a case with near 200% hike. Ijust
shrugged and said, “well, good for them” but never understood how therewas such
an acute shortage suddenly. I thought maybe the stalled projects over 18 months
weresuddenly started at the same time. Then reality struck! The actualdemand
was never that much. So these companies had to trim down. Themcompanies, using
“fake resume” as an excuse to fire, cannot be ruled out thoughstrictly speaking
such an excuse is not needed.

This is no different as in case with arrangedmarriages when while rejecting the
proposal the standard excuse is “जन्म कुंडली नहीं मिल रही।” (the horoscopes do
not match).

Q10               Are mules found naturally in thewild or obtained by humans
through selective breeding?

A10        Our Animal Friends, Answered by Mary AnnBesser,  Oct 31

Yes, it is possible for a male donkey and a female horseto breed and produce
offspring in the wild. However, the possibility of this occurring naturally in
the wild is certainly rare. First, there would have to be a place where the two
coexist in the samehabitat. Then, the two would have to choose to interbreed
rather than matewithin their own species.

Selective breedingof mules has occurred for thousands of years. Mules have
manyof the best qualities of horses and donkeys. They are stronger, eat less,
andlive longer than horses. They are also larger and have calmerpersonalities
than donkeys. The parents of mules are selected and bred fortheir specific
traits. Themother horse determines the mule’s size and physical endurance. The
fatherdonkey gives the mule its intelligence, easy care, and longevity. The
resulting mule will likely be sterile.

A horse has 64chromosomes whereas a donkey has 62. A mule ends up with 63
chromosomes andthus is unlikely to produce sex cells during meiosis. There have
been a few rare cases where a female mule hasgiven birth but no known cases
where a father has reproduced.

Now, for theunusual. I had a cousin who had a beautiful female Arabian horse.

Why the neighboringfarm decided to have a male donkey on a modern-day working
farm is certainlybeyond me but they did. One day their donkey escaped and took
a liking to mycousin’s horse. The end result of their union was my cousin ended
up with amule. ….

My note- Anexcellent information about mules.
