CULTURAL QA 06-2023-15

Q1         How do I pick the right door colourpaint?

Gopala Krishnan, FormerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of
Telecom (1966–2004)Justnow

Painting is donefor protection of the door. Mostly teak wood doors are not
painted, butpolished.

Depending on theclimate, certain paints are not good. One such is white. Rain
affects the doors opening tooutside, moisture and dust can make the door giving
a poor appearance. Repeatedmaintenance is necessary in a country like India.
For indoors white is OK, if must  be well maintained.

Generally dark colourslike dark brown are moresuited in such areas.

Nowadays absorbinglight is not given much importance. Any colour pleasing to
eye and attracting can be used, in my opinion.

Q2         Why do airplanes have windows?

A2          Vishnu Ravi, Bachelor of Engineeringin Aerospace and Aeronautical
Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology,Madras (IITM) (Graduated 2015)Jun 2

Airplanesincorporate windows for a variety of purposes:

Managing Air Pressure: The utilization of roundwindows in modern aircraft
serves the purpose of effectively managing airpressure differentials both
inside and outside the plane. While cruising ataltitudes above 10,000 feet, the
aircraft cabins are pressurized toapproximately 11-12 psi, whereas the external
air pressure dwindles to merely4-5 psi. This significant contrast in pressure
places stresses on the windows, necessitating their robustness throughout
flights.

Enhancing Comfort: In addition to providing ameans of egress during
emergencies, airplane windows contribute to a morecomfortable flying
experience, particularly for passengers who experience fearof flying. Gazing
outof the window can instil a sense of control and alleviate anxiety
amongpassengers.

Ensuring Safety: The presence of windows enablespassengers to visually assess
potential threats from various sides of theaircraft, such as fires that may
occur following a runway excursion.

Aerodynamic Considerations: The design ofairplane windows is intricately linked
to the aerodynamics of the aircraft.Round windows are better equipped to
withstand the pressure differentialsbetween the plane's interior and the
external environment, which is why theyare employed instead of square windows.

Weight Efficiency: Enlarging the windows wouldaugment the weight of the
aircraft, consequently escalating both themaintenance costs and overall weight.
As a result, freighter planes forego windows, as thestructural components
surrounding them contribute to additional weight.

Multiple Protective Layers: Passenger aircraftwindows are typically composed of
three layers of acrylic material, providing an additionalsafeguard by
effectively managing pressure disparities and ensuring thewell-being of both
the aircraft and its occupants.

Marketing Advantage: Windows were swiftlyrecognized as a notable selling point
in the early stages of passengeraviation. While aircraft without windows would
possess enhanced strength and bemore cost-effective and easier to manufacture,
the presence of windows ispreferred by passengers.

Q3         What will happen if I run an airconditioner in an empty room
surrounded by fully closed walls?

A3          Ajay Meda, Experienced in theinstallation and repair of AC's
Updated 2y

There seems to besome confusion among many people on how exactly Air
conditioner’s work. So, letme throw on light on the process.

An Airconditioner essentially cools the air in a room by transferring it’s heat
fromthe inside to the outside. No air is moved in and out of the room .

Once the desiredtemperature is reached inside the room, the AC switches off and
only getsswitched on when the temperature has increased a little inside the
room.

**It is dangerousto stay in a room with completely closed windows (with or
without the ACrunning) since the percentage of carbon dioxide increases and you
will sufferfrom asphyxiation (lack of fresh air to breathe).

**The best way touse an AC is to set an optimal temperature and open at
leastone window slightly so that there is proper ventilation in the room.

My note-** I washighlighting these points in many of my earlier notes also.
There were responses with difference- all doors and windows must be closed for
better air conditioning.Since one window is slightly opened fresh air also
enter inside. There will not be any suffocation,if any problem occurs to the AC
system.

Q4         Did primates invent bananas?

A4          Matt Riggsby, MA ArchaeologicalStudies, Boston University9h

Yes. This is a wild banana:

Chock full of seeds. It’s also got a tough skin, it’spretty small, and such
flesh as it has isn’t very sweet. It’s pretty different from thebananas you get
at the grocery store. That kind of banana is theproduct of thousands of years
of domestication and selective breeding. Earlyfarmers in Southeast Asia started
growing fruit not much unlike these but bredthem for fewer seeds, softer skins,
sweeter pulp, and so on. Eventually, this processproduced the substantial,
ready-to-peel-and-eat bananas we know today as wellas the tougher, starchier
plantain.

So, then, bananasare the product of deliberate artifice in breeding, and that
breeding was doneby our species, which is a primate. Primates invented bananas.

My note- When Istarted gardening, I could get a Banana sapling, intimated by
nursery that they have prepared it fromseeds. It grew well, tall, with wider
and lengthy leaves and finallyvery attractive and small size banana appeared.
Oncecut and after ripening I found the bananas have least pulp and seeds to
thesize of a pepper. Eatingit was very difficult, removing seeds. But flesh was
very tasty. Having noother way, I cut and removed it from the garden.

Q5         What is Hz? How do you measure or checkit?

A5          Offerbazar24/7,Btech in Ekashila HighSchool & Rd Junior College,
Ekashila High School (Graduated 2021)36m

Hz stands for hertz and is the unit of frequency in theInternational System of
Units (SI). It represents the number ofcycles or events that occur in one
second. In simple terms, it measureshow many times something happens in a given
time frame, specifically within onesecond.

Hz is commonly usedto measure the frequency of various phenomena, such as
electrical signals, sound waves, radio waves, andcomputer processor speeds.
Here are a few examples:

Electrical signals: In electronics, the frequency ofalternating current (AC) is
measured in hertz. For instance, standard householdelectricity in many
countries has a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz.

My note- Nowadays in Chennai, it is observed the cyclesgetting reduced and for
fraction of a second, we could observe  lights going OFF as if the supply is
going OFF.

Sound waves: The frequency of sound is alsomeasured in hertz. It determines the
pitch of a sound. For example, a tuning fork vibrating at 440Hz produces the
musical note A.

Radio waves: The frequencies of radio waves, including those used for
communication and broadcasting, are measured in hertz.FM radio stations
typically operate in the range of 88 to 108 MHz (megahertz),which is equivalent
to 88 million to 108 million hertz.

To measure or checkthe frequency in hertz, different methods are used depending
on the specificphenomenon:

Electrical signals: Oscilloscopes are commonlyused to measure the frequency of
electrical signals. These instruments displaythe waveform and provide frequency
analysis.

Sound waves: In the case of sound, a device calleda frequency counter or a
spectrum analyzer can be used to measure the frequencyin hertz.

Radio waves: For radio waves, specializedequipment such as spectrum analyzers
or radio frequency (RF) meters are used tomeasure the frequency.

In many cases, modern devices and applications provide built-in frequency
measurementcapabilities. For example, software-basedtools on computers or
smartphones may offer frequency analysis for audiosignals or provide
information about the clock speed of a processor.
