We are in the frenzy of Unrelating. And we call this the great scientific
and economic advancement.
Unmāda (उन्माद) refers to “frenzy”, as mentioned in verse 5.37-39 of the
Aṣṭāṅga hṛdaya saṃhitā (Sūtrasthāna) by Vāgbhaṭa.Frenzy is the extreme
which is highlighted by extreme happiness as well as insanity as the
unmadha persons , may not be aware of this earth.
Unmāda (उन्माद, “insanity”) is caused by determinants (vibhāva) such as
death of beloved persons, loss of wealth, stroke of adversity, derangement
of [the three humours]: wind (vāta), biles (pitta), phelgm (śleṣmā), and
the like. It is to be represented on the stage by laughing, weeping,
crying, talking, lying down, sitting, running, dancing, singing and
reciting [something] without any reason, smearing [the body] with ashes and
dust, taking grass, Nirmālya. soiled cloth, tags, potsherd and earthen tray
as decoration [of the body], many other senseless acts, and imitation of
others.
Unmāda (उन्माद).—One of the ten stages of love (kāma);—When a woman
introduces topic about him (i.e. the beloved) on all occasions and hates
all other males, it is a case of Insanity (unmāda). To represent Insanity
one should sometime look with a steadfast gaze, sometimes heave a deep
sigh, sometimes be absorbed within oneself and sometimes weep at the usual
time for recreation.

“Confused understanding caused by extreme bliss, calamity or separation is
called unmāda (insanity). In this state the actions are loud laughing,
dancing, singing, useless actions, prattling, running, shouting and
performing activities opposite to what are usually performed.”
Garga samhitai describes the ecstasy of the Krishna’s Gopikas:
श्री-यौवनोन्मद-विघूर्णित-लोचनो ऽसौ
नीलालकालि-कलितांस-कपोल-गोलः
सत्-पीत-कञ्चुक-घनान्तम् अशेष्म् आराद्

nīlālakāli-kalitāṃsa-kapola-golaḥ
sat-pīta-kañcuka-ghanāntam aśeṣm ārād
ācālayan dhvani-matā sva-padāruṇena
śrī-yauvana-by youthfulness; unmada—intoxication; vighūrṇita—rolling;
locanaḥ—eyes; asau—He; nīlālakāli—dark locks of hair; kalitāṃsa—on His
shoulders; kapola-golaḥ—and cheeks; sat-pīta-kañcuka-ghanāntam—the edge of
the yellow garment; aśeṣam—all; ārāt—near; acālayan—moving;
dhvani-matā—sound; sva-padā—with His foot; aruṇena—red.
His eyes rolling in the intoxication of glorious youth, His black locks
resting on His cheeks and shoulders covered with a yellow shawl, He walks
here, the anklets tinkling on His reddish feet.
uncontrolled and excited behaviour or emotion that is sometimes
violent: is FRENZY.
Religious ecstasy is a type of altered state of consciousness
characterized by greatly reduced external awareness and reportedly expanded
interior mental and spiritual awareness, frequently accompanied by visions
and emotional (and sometimes physical) euphoria.
Religion pales into a dreary occupation when it becomes a muddle of
rules and regulations and a Procrustean bed of regimented practices, and is
bereft of the thrill that one feels in the presence of the beloved.
Religion is not merely discipline but also love and grace. The instance of
the Gopis is, on the one hand, an illustration of the super-individual and
supersocial nature of the soul’s asking for God, and, on the other hand,
the way in which God can dissolve His parliament and council of enactments
and rules, and run to the devotee personally without the use of secondary
means of assistance. The twenty-second verse of the Ninth Chapter of the
Bhagavad Gita is a promise of God that He shall personally take care of His
devotees when they are undividedly united with Him. Spiritual ecstasy is
the subject of the five chapters delineating the Rasa-Lila of Krishna in
the tenth Book of the Bhagavata. Here devotion reaches a pitch to the point
of breaking and collapsing as the individual is melting down into the
blissful menstruum of the sea of God. Devotion of this kind, known as
Ragatmika-Bhakti, or the devotion of ecstasy, as different from
Gauna-Bhakti, or formalistic and disciplined form of devotion, commences
with a kind of agitation of the soul within, a stimulation it feels in
itself, not through the intellect, mind and senses, but verily as it is in
itself, when the devotee attempts firstly to cry for God in a state of
bereavement from Him; secondly becomes temporarily unconscious through
exhaustion caused by the intensity of longing; and thirdly enters into a
rapturous impulsion to imitate God, His features and actions, and dances in
the spirit of a possession, as if that which one imitates has actually
entered the person so imitating. The best actor in a dramatic performance
are those who virtually become the very part they are playing and lose
their personal identity. The Gopis were in this penultimate state of actual
union with God, which further on, led them to a state of tearing down all
the empirical shackles of personality-consciousness and external relation
in a verily maddening reach of giddy heights where it is not merely the
devotee that runs after God, but God Himself running to the devotee, God
wanting man much more than man wants God. It is not enough if the devotee
wants God; the highest devotion is where God loves the devotee and behaves
as if He is a very servant of the one who loves Him. The lives of saints
who lived such a life of God-possession are examples practically to be seen
in the history of religious thought and practice.
Sivananda terms the finality to ecstasy of brahmam in short:
That unmanifested, the Indestructible, It is called; It is named the
highest path. They who reach It return not. That is My Supreme Abode"
(Gita: VIII‑21). "By His grace thou shalt obtain supreme peace, the
everlasting dwelling place" (XVIII‑62). "The devotees, liberated from the
bonds of birth, go to the blissful seat" (II‑51). Param Dhama (Supreme
abode), Anandamaya Pada (Blissful seat), Sasvata Pada (everlasting abode),
Parama Gati (highest path) are all synonymous terms.
HARVEST OF GOD-REALISATION
Faith is the seed;
Divine grace is the rain;
Prayer is the plough;
Self-surrender is the rein;
Worship is the handle;
Meditation is the ox;
Devotion is the goal;
Ploughing is weeding
'I'-ness and 'mine'-ness;
The harvest is God-realisation,
Which removes all sorrows and pains,
And bestows everlasting peace,
Joy and eternal satisfaction.
Frenzy leads to hospital as well as the heaven; in former it is
madness but in latter it is the route of vimochanam. KR IRS 12 9 23
