What I read was that Jaya and Vijaya told the Rishis that they can't allow
anyone inside Vaikunta without His permission and hence asked them to wait.

I thought this is their duty, like any security guard will do.

So when I heard this story for the first time several years ago that they
were cursed for doing their duty I was wondering why it was so.

May be there is more to the story than this mere reason.  I don't think the
Rishis are egoistic to take offense to someone doing his duty.
