Q1         What types of people are at risk forvitamin D deficiencies?

A1          Dr. Benjamin McLean, Doctor ofMedicine at Mater Private Hospital,
Brisbane (2015–present)Oct 22

As a Doctorof Medicine, I can provide you with a detailed answer on the types
of peoplewho are at risk for vitamin D deficiencies.

Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient that plays a vitalrole in maintaining overall
health. It isessential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the
body, which arenecessary for strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D also has other
important functions, includingsupporting the immune system, muscle function,
and cell growth. Thereare several factors that can increase the risk of vitamin
D deficiency, andI'll discuss them in detail below:

1. Inadequate Sun Exposure: Vitamin D is oftenreferred to as the "sunshine
vitamin" because the skin can produce it when exposedto sunlight. People who
spend little time outdoors, live in regions withlimited sunlight, or have
lifestyles that keep them indoors most of the timeare at risk of vitamin D
deficiency. This is especially true for individuals innorthern latitudes or
during the winter months when sunlight is less intense.

2. Darker Skin Tones: Melanin, the pigmentresponsible for skin color, reduces
the skin's ability to produce vitamin D inresponse to sunlight. As a result,
individuals with darker skin tones requiremore sun exposure to produce the same
amount of vitamin D as those with lighterskin. This places people with darker
skin at higher risk for vitamin Ddeficiency.

3. Aging: Aspeople age, the skin's ability to synthesize vitamin D from
sunlight decreases.Older adults may also spend more time indoors or have
limited mobility, furtherincreasing their risk of deficiency.

4. Obesity: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means it can be stored in
adiposetissue (body fat). Individuals with obesity may have lower
bioavailability ofvitamin D because the vitamin is sequestered in fat cells,
making it lessavailable for use in the body.

5. Inadequate Dietary Intake: While it'spossible to get vitamin D from food
sourcessuch as fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and supplements, some
people havedietary habits that do not provide enough of this essential
nutrient. This isparticularly relevant for individuals who follow strict
vegetarian or vegandiets.

6.Malabsorption Disorders: Certain medical conditions, such as celiac
disease,Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome, can affect theabsorption
of fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin D. People with theseconditions are
at increased risk of deficiency.

7. Kidney and Liver Disorders: Theconversion of vitamin D into its active form
occurs primarily in the kidneysand liver. Individuals with kidney or liver
disorders may have impairedconversion and utilization of vitamin D, which can
lead to deficiency.

8. Medications: Some medications, like certainanticonvulsants, glucocorticoids,
and weight-loss medications, can interferewith vitamin D metabolism or
absorption, increasing the risk of deficiency.

9. Limited Sunscreen Use: While it's essentialto protect the skin from harmful
UVradiation, excessive and prolonged use of sunscreen with a high sun
protectionfactor (SPF) can block the skin's ability to produce vitamin D.
People whodiligently use sunscreen or cover their skin may be at risk.

10. Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women: Womenwho are pregnant or breastfeeding
have higher vitamin D requirements, and adeficiency in this group can affect
both the mother and the developing child.

11. Geographic Location: Thoseliving at higher latitudes with limited sunlight
during certain seasons are ata greater risk of vitamin D deficiency, as
theangle of the sun in the sky can affect the skin's ability to produce vitamin
D.

12. Chronic Illness: People with chronicillnesses, such asdiabetes, autoimmune
diseases, and HIV, may be at an increased risk of vitamin Ddeficiency due to
the inflammatory processes associated with these conditions.

If yoususpect you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency, it'simportant to
consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate testing andguidance.
They can recommend dietary changes, supplements, or otherinterventions to
address your specific needs and help prevent the potentialhealth consequences
of vitamin D deficiency.

Ganga, he saw an Apsara bathing there.

brain to become wise and gain knowledge.

Only Sahadev fulfilled his wish and ate his brain. On eating for the first time,
he got information about the things that havehappened in the world. Oneating it
for the second time, he learned about the things happening in the presentand on
eating it for the third time, he got information about what is going tohappen
in the future.

3.The stories of friendship between Karna andDuryodhana are quite famous. Karna
and Duryodhana's wife were once playingchess.

Karna waswinning in this game when Bhanumati saw Duryodhana coming and tried to

tried toget up, Karna tried to catch her.Instead of Bhanumati, her pearl
necklace cameinto his hand and it broke. Duryodhana had come into the room by
then.

after the marriage.

In this situation, Lord Krishna took the form ofMohini and not only married
Iravan but also cried like a wife while biddingfarewell to him.

My note- Thislegend is new to me

Q4         Can a herbivorous animal ever befriends with a carnivore?

A4          Gary Meaney, author of Zoology'sGreatest Mystery (2022)Sep 29

It hashappened before, in a way. Inthe arid thickets of Northern Kenya, there
was a majestic lioness who came tobe known as Kamunyak. In the language of the
local Samburu people, thename means “Blessed One”. Indeed, perhaps she was
blessed with a spirit of compassion rarely seen inother lions.

In 2002, Kamunyak was seen doing something extraordinary. Sherested with a
young Beisa oryx, a frail calf who must have been separated fromits herd. She
hadn’t killed it- it was very much alive. Nor was she keeping it around so she
coulddispatch it later. As the days went on, safarigoerswitnessed Kamunyak
fiercely protect the calf from predators - even other lions.Tragically, her
effortscould only prevent so much. A couple of weeks after the “adoption”
occurred, the baby was eaten by a lion, one with a more typical killer instinct.

On its own, this case is a quirky footnote in the annals of ethology, but what
makes thingsmuch more significant and interesting is the fact that this was far
from thelast time it happened. Before long, our Blessed One hadadopted again.
This times, however, she was much more aggressive in acquiringthe baby, who was
under the watchful eye of its birth parents.

She ran intothe herd and scared off the adults, before snatching the baby,
dragging it byits umbilical cord to her lair. Here, once again, she simply lay
down with the new companion, and loyally defended it from any creature that came
in the hopes of eating it.By now, she was attracting hordes of tourists to the
national park, and thekeen attention of many a zoologist.

There is, of course, one problem with this otherwisecharming relationship -
oryxes do not eat meat.It soon became clear that the calf was starving and
becoming emaciated, so therangers deemed it time to intervene. They rescued the
baby and returned it to its herd. This did notdiscourage Kamunyak. She adopted
an oryx, again… and again… and again.

Yes - over the course of a year, the lioness adoptedsome five newborn Beisa
oryxes. The firsttime, researchers generally dismissed the phenomenon as a
weird behaviouralfluke, a byproduct of the hormones of youth. As it
kepthappening, however, it became clear that Kamunyak and her instincts
weredifferent.

Just as sheinadvertently starved her adoptees, her adoptees came to starve her.
Onnumerous occasions, a companion calf would “blow her cover” as she talked
aherd of prey animals and squander her chances of getting a meal.
Lionsgenerally succeed in only a sixth of their hunts as it is, so every
attemptruined is a catastrophic blow to chances of survival. You might have
noticedthat Kamunyak is quite gaunt in the photos above.Perhaps this is the
reason that the Blessed One’s last everoryx befell such an unexpected fate. In
October, she was caring for herfifth. Her first had been killed by another
lion, and her second and third hadbeen rescued by park rangers. When the
rangers got wind of this calf, however, they had a change of heart. They decided
to let nature take its course and justobserve from the sidelines.

The days went by, and of course the oryx wentwithout its mother’s milk, its
condition getting worse and worse before itultimately starved. The death of the
calf seemed to elicit a change inKamunyak. To the shock of the rangers
watching, she ate it.After that, she never adopted again, and her behaviourwas
indistinguishable from that of a regular lioness.

Kamunyak was last seen in 2004. It is fairlycertain that she is no longer with
us, buther extraordinary life made waves through the world of animal ethology.
Incases like these, nuance is key, I think. It’s important not
toanthropomorphise animals and assign them human-like emotions, but it is
equallyimportant not to reduce them to simple machines hardwired with
basicprogramming. It may be impossible to know why she seemed to act with
suchaltruism, but her story sure is thought-provoking.

Perhaps it was a quirk of the maternal instinct. In 2018, a similar incident
wasobserved in Namibia’s Etosha National Park, in which a lioness groomed,
caredfor and protected a tiny springbok lamb. Not long before this, her cubs
weretragically killed by rival lions. Did she adopt the lamb to fill the void?

An even more complex case comes from Uganda in2012, when a different lioness
seemed toadopt a baby Ugandan kob. It sounds heartwarming at first, until one
learnsthat this was immediately after the big cat killed and ate its mother.
Ifthere’s one thing for sure, it’s that the natural world and our ideas
ofmorality rarely align.

I’d love to hear what you guys think about allthis, it’s a fascinating topic.
Moreover, I hopeyou enjoyed the answer, thank you so much for reading! Have an
amazing day.

Q5         What are some of the best storiesrelated to Lord Indra?

A5          Amit Nishad, Clerk at The Institute ofCompany Secretaries of India
(ICSI) (2023–present)6h

According to the story, once Devraj Indra waspassing through the sky. On the
way, his eyes fell on the ashram of GautamRishi. Indra saw a young girl near
the ashram. This beautiful girl was Ahilya, wife of Gautam Rishi, who was
blessed to remain youthful throughout her life.

Ahalya was a very beautiful, polite and devotedwoman. She was married to sage
Gautam. Both of them used to do penance andmeditation while living in the
forest. Due to the beauty of Ahilya, all thesages, gods and demons were
fascinated by her. Indra, the king of the gods, hadbecome too fascinated.
Indra'smind became greedy to get Ahalya.Just what then.

One day,Devraj Indra disguised himself as a cock and started crowing outside
the sage'sashram at night. Gautam Muni felt that it wasmorning. The sage got up
at the same time and left the ashram for morning bath.Seeing the opportunity,
Indra assumed the guise ofGautam Muni and came to Goddess Ahilya.

Here, whenGautam Muni realized that there was still night left and it was time
formorning, then he returned back towards the ashram. When the sage reached
near the ashram, Indra wascoming out of his ashram. He recognized Indra.
Knowing this misdeed done byIndra, the sage became angry and cursed Indra and
Goddess Ahilya.

Indra alsobecame frightened. The sage cursed Indra and said, 'Fool, you have
violated mywife's femininity. Icurse you that right now a thousand vaginas will
be born all over your body.

When GoddessAhalya repeatedly apologized and said, 'There is no fault of mine
in this', Gautam Muni said that you willlive here as a rock. In Tretayuga, when
Lord Vishnu will incarnate asRam, then you will be saved by the grace of his
feet.
