REFILL

Dearfriends,

Ilooked in to the meaning of the word –refill. In Google search I found the
meaning as filling a container again. However by practice if we go and ask for a
refill in a stationery shop, he willshow different types of cartridges for
ballpoint pens. An interesting look into refills with nostalgic memories.

1. Inkpen and refilling cartridges.

Irecollect during my college days there were ink pens which had cartridges.
Outerbody of pen  was removed from the neck andthe cartridge with neck and nib
was dipped in to ink bottle and body slightlypressed. From the bottle ink was
sucked to cartridge. These pens were morecostly and leak proof.

2. Ballpoint pens and refills.

Whenball point pens became very common in 1962’s , and most persons started
usingball pens by 1970’s, it was not desired for writing cheques for long time.
When most people started writing with ballpoints, somehow cheques were also
started writing with ball pens, banks startedpermitting cheques written with
ball pens. I made a Google search, I could notget any such date. However I can
tell one thing. In telecom department greenink was used by Gazetted officers to
write and draw money by cheques till 1991.

3.Costly ball pens  and refills.

Ballpointpens were costly, it was a practice to purchase 3-4 refills suited to
the penalong with pens. By the time the refills exhausted somehow the pens got
damagedand now ball pens were purchased.

Ball Pensappeared with cap, without cap and pressing top protrusion to enable
cartridge appearingfor writing, another pressing with drawing tip of cartridge,
ball pens similarto pencil  with cap etc.

4. Costof cartridge

At onetime cost of cartridge became almost equal to pen, people started to
purchasenew ball pens and a declinecame for the purchase of ball point refills.
 However still refills are available.

5. Ballpoint pen price

Nowadays ball point pens are available from Rs10-00 to 50-00 rupees in India.
Most purchase 4-5 pens at a time. Cartridgeswith black/ blue are commonly used.
Green, violet and red pens are mostly usedby institutions. Nowadays for most
ball pen is “use and throw” while ink isexhausted in the cartridge.

6.Refills for hot drinks.

Powdersfor Hot drinks like Horlicks, bournvitta, Viva etc. appeared in glass
bottles, changed to plastic bottles and later in cartons, which can be
transferred tobottles. Most purchase first time bottles of the product and
later carton packs, and fill in bottles. In fact in most of the TV
advertisements for thesepowders, cartons are shown. Cartonsare priced less than
bottles.

Mostprobably tea powder and coffee powder came in cartons (except Nescafe,Bru
etc.)and transferred to bottles.

7. Oilsin plastic packs.

Nowmany cooking oils come in plastic pouches , and we open and transfer
tobottles, glass, Tupper ware or metallic containers. However some oils came
inplastic bottles only.

8. Detergent powders

They camein packs and plastic containers. First time powder in container is
purchasedand later in refill packs. The price difference is not small.

9.Detergent liquids

Firsttime appeared only in plastic containers and later in pouches. We can
transferrequired quantity to containers, keeping remaining in pouch. Pouches
are verygood quality. Probably “Fab”the new detergent liquid alone comes in
pouches alone.

10 LPGGas refill.

Everythingfine, once LPG gas is exhausted, we place orders  for a new LPG
cylinder. But this is called refill booking!. Mostprobably after supplying new
cylinder, empty cylinder is taken back, making itfor calling as refill booking.
