Thanks Sri G K.
Q 2 reminded me of this joke, a fairly old one.
A very rich merchant was on a voyage by sea when a powerful hurricane tossed
the ship around. The captain seemed helpless and asked people to pray.
This merchant promised God that if he were to survive he will sell his palatial
bungalow and donate the entire sale proceeds to charity.
They survived and reached ashore and this fellow was in two minds, thinking
whether he committed a mistake by promising too much too soon but finally
settled on an idea which he thoughtWill enable him to keep his promiseAnd
alsoNot give too much away.
He advertised that he will sell his cat for 5 million dollars BUTWill give as a
bonus his bungalow for 1000 dollars.
Since the bungalow was worth that much he sold both, Kept 5 million dollars
with himselfAnd as promised donated 1000 dollars.
There are various but devious ways to circumvent anything.

Q1 What happened to Ekalvya after he cutoff his thumb in Guru Dakshina?
A1 Rama G, Lives in Bengaluru,Karnataka, India Updated Thu
This is whatI heard from my teachers when I was in high school.
Ekalvya is aNishada king. Tribal rules are different. Not follow dharmas of
othersocieties. Strength is their asset. They have their own rules.
Drona wantsomeone who is best in strength, follower of dharma, who has
Vichakshna as hisstudent and saviour of Hasthina.
That is thereason he didn't find even his own child Aswathama as suitable to
learn thebest archery from him. Which father keeps away their own children for
otherssake?
Eligibilitydoesn't mean only expertice. It needs patience, calm nature, Dharma
vichakshna.
Aswathama, Ekalvyathese people are very short tempered.
Ekalavyapunishes a dog for barking and disturbing him when he was practicing.
He isright according to his tribal rules. Not for Hasthina.
Purpose ofteaching should be seen as an issue between right and wrong. Guru
works for theside of right. Love and mercy are more powerful than hatred and
cruelty.
He stopped Ekalvyanot killed him. He can do that also if he want to misuse his
position. A personwith a missing limb can not become king of Hasthina pura.Just
like Dhritarashtra. So he ensured that.
Even afterall this, he blesses Ekalavya with best skills, so he practices
without thumband excels. I heard till date those skills are practiced in
archery. Not usingThumb. I am not an expert in archery. So, this is just what I
read.
Finally asexpected Ekalavya makes friends with Jarasandha and killed by Lord
Krishna.
Arjun thinkstwice even before Kurukshetra war. Doesn't want to fight. Then by
Krishna’s‘Gitopadesam’ he fights war. Ekalavya’s mindset, manners are different.
Being aBrahman guru, Drona did ‘Himsa’ by asking ekalavya his thumb as Guru
dakshina.May be for good reasons. His loyalty towards Hasthina pura kingdom. He
is Rajaguru. Still, has to face consequences of his karma.
So, died inwar by a lie.
“Aswathama hathaha kunjaraha” said byDharmaraya.
Bharatham isfull of this kind of rules, principles, dharma, adharma, conflicts
betweenthem, doubts, clarification, you can't measure them with present day
scales.
Thosecharacters are not black and white, they have different shades also.
Peopleobviously pick up points according to their taste, their view point.
People seewhatever they like to see, hear whatever they like to hear.
I takeekalavya as my idol for his lakshya sadhana. Will power. Even Guru is not
readyto teach him, he learnt on his own how to excel in his chosen field.
Humans takebirth for some reasons, die again for some reasons.
Thosereasons may appear logical to some . Illogical to some.
Picking upgood things from any epics help us. Especially from those which
happenedthousands of years back instead of dissecting and post mortem.
If you haveplenty of time to waste or your goal is to prove who is wrong or
right, all thebest.
Q2 What's the funniest joke you've heard recently?
A2 Robert Farnsworth,Apr 4
“Hey mom!Can I buy a car? There is this advertisement in the paper for a new
Porsche,only $25.00!”
“Oh, I am sure it is a misprint,” said mom,“no one would put that kind of
price on a car like that.”
“Can we go and see?” said the boy.
So they wentto the address.
Sure enough, there was a brand new Porsche, in excellent condition, with only a
few hundredmiles on it.
A woman sawthem looking at and came out.
The boy said“It is a beautiful car. It was advertised at $25.00. How much is it
really??”
“It’s $25; unless that is too much for you,I’ll lower the price.”
The boyforked over the $25 and they signed the papers.
Before theyleft with the car the boy’s mother said “I just have to ask. Why are
you selling thisvaluable auto for only $25?”
“Well,” said the lady, “My husband left theother day and ran away withhis
secretary. He wired me from Hawaii saying ‘Sell my car, send me the money.’So
that is what I am doing.”
Q3 Do you know any funny jokes involvinganimals?
A3 Marek Čtrnáct,10mo
The animalsin the forest decide to build a public toilet in order to have a
cleanerforest.
For a weekor so, everything is fine. But then, one day, a hole appears in the
door.
The wolf, whose cousin is a police dog, takes the role of the investigator.
“Does anyone know what happened here?” heasks.
“Yes, I know something,”says the rabbit. “Yousee, the bear went to use the
toilet, but there was no toilet paper. I was justoutside, so the bear grabbed
me, wiped his butt with me, and threw me out sohard that I flew through the
door.”
“The bear, yes…” says the wolf. The bear is big, strong, and cranky, and the
wolf has nodesire to tangle with him. “Fine,” he says, “we’ll just repair the
door. Idon’t think this will repeat.”
Another weekpasses, and this time, thedoor is lying on the ground. So the wolf
investigates again.
“Does anyone know what happened here?” heasks.
“Yes, I know something,” says the fox. “Thebear was on the toilet, and there
was no toilet paper, so he grabbed me, wipedhis butt with me, and throw me
against the door with such force that the door hingesbroke.
All theanimals take a while to think about it. Such brutality! Such strength!
No, theydon’t want to tangle with the bear. So they, again, repair the door and
saynothing.
And then, aweek after that, they see thatthe whole building is completely
demolished. The walls are reduced to rubble. The toilet itself is broken
intoshards.
“OK,” says the wolf, “this is too much. Evenif it is the bear again, we can’t
let this slide, but, just to keep theprotocol… does anyone know what happened
here?”
“Yes, I know something,” says the hedgehog…
Q4 Do all trees produce oxygen for humansto breathe, even when they do
not have leaves? If so, what percentage of oxygencomes from trees?
A4 Ken Saladin,Former professor ofhistology (microscopic
anatomy)Updated Apr 8
I can’t tellyou specific numbers, but I know (if my readings are correct) that
oceanic phytoplankton produces moreof the world’s oxygen than any other source,
and on land, grasslands producemore than forests.
Even urban lawns produce a significant amount ofoxygen in growing season, but
they have anet oxygen consumption by decay in the nongrowing part of the year.
A 5,000sq.ft. lawn (a little over 0.1 acre) produces enough oxygen to meet the
needsof nerly 35 people per day, whereas the same area of forest produces
enough for8 to 18 people.[1]
With few exceptions, trees do notproduce oxygen when they have no leaves. One
exception is the palo verde tree of the American Southwest, which
haschlorophyll throughout (hence its green branches) and
photosynthesizeseverywhere, with or without leaves.
Palo verde
It must be remembered that evenphotosynthetic plants don’t just produce oxygen,
they also consume it.In the winter, leafless deciduous trees only consume it,
and some forestsconsume about as much oxygen as they produce because of the
decay of vegetationand other matter of the forest floor. A tropical rainforest
is not a netproducer of oxygen.
Q5 Why is it a bad idea to run from abear?
A5 Mats Andersson, Businessman atLanguage Industry (1991–present)Apr 5
Bears don’tclassify much. They divide the world into a few simple categories.
It hasworked for them for millions of years. Those categories are:
Things to mate with. Things to eat. Things that might be a threat.
Rocks.
Many animalswill have category 3 labelled “Things to run away from”, but that’s
not whatbears do. They walk up to it and whack it; problem solved.
When youchance upon a bear, it will immediately discard option 1. You are
provisionallyin class 4, but it’s watching for evidence to the contrary.
Bears don’t normally eat humans. We’re far too big to be bear prey. But if we
run away, we might suddenlytrigger pattern recognition for option 2. Walking
towards it is, of course, worse, because we get upgraded to option 3 pretty
quickly, the bear will solvethe problem, and then we’ll be investigated for
whether our remains maybeclassify as option 2.
What you want to do is to display behaviour thatmakes it think you have filed
it under option 4.That’s when you keep lookingat it, but slowly and confidently
walk away. Since you’re not afraid, you can’tbe food; since you’re not
advancing towards it, you can’t be a threat.
Mind you,it’s not certain that you will suddenly be classified as food. But you
reallydon’t want to take chances with a bear.
