Thanks Sri G K for the write up. Brought back memories of my (holi)days with my grandfather. I too used to relish lying down on the wooden easy chair. Unjal ( swings) was another item we loved to sit and sleep on - the long wooden ones. Modern flats don't have that big unjals as the hall space is limited. Swinging on them was such a pleasure. A time pass reading Gopalakrishnan 3-10-2024 In my home there was a wooden easy chair body caned and had hands –a provision for few things . A separate plank was there to put on the hands and my late father used to keep his books and write important things. If the plank was removed one could extend his legs to relax after meals. In the morning after waking up from the mat, I used to sleep in that in my boyhood days. There were chairs without such hands. Some chairs had hands which could be folded. Some chairs had the body with planks. Normally provided in the hall, it occupied more space. Normally guests were offered this type of easy chair for sitting. Whatever the type easy chair was kept neat and tidy. Easy chair with cloth Gradually the wooden caned easy chairs were replaced with wooden framed easy chairs with canvas cloth for sitting and relaxing. These chairs too had hands which could be folded. The canvas cloth had stitched end so that one small wooden rod could be inserted. Easy chair clothes were available in shops in canvas cloth. These clothes had stitched end so that a wooden road of about one inch diameter could pass through. The cloth was put through by inserting two groves in the frame work on either ends . If the rods inserted were not tight, easily the rod could be removed. Children used to play removing the rod, so the person sitting could fall down, but no injuries. So in later chairs the stitching at the ends were made so that the when the rod is inserted it was tight, very difficult to remove. By removing the rods the canvas cloth could be removed for washing. This type of easy chairs continued for long time. These chairs could be folded and kept, so occupying space did not arise unless opened and placed for sitting, extending legs or placing a plank for writing. After the appearance of steel easy chairs came in steel, clothing could be either canvas or nylon cloth with which the chairs came. The cloth could be removed after removing a central screw and widening the frame on either end. These chairs had no hands or rods. But elegant and gave a good look by the painting of the body. With the appearance of Setti, the use of easy chair got reduced. Small easy chairs Small easy chairs appeared either with steel body or wooden body. These chairs could be used to sit and slightly bend so that a person could get relaxed. These are still available in furniture shops. Easy chairs in steel is still there in furniture shops Sofa With the appearance of sofa, setti lost it’s use. Nowadays it is used in reading rooms. But still available in furniture shops. -- To go to your groups page on the web, login to your gmail account and then click on https://groups.google.com/ --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "iyer123" group.
