Swetaswara uipanishad Knowing, all-witnessing and non-dual, who has granted them their prayers to bestow them Self-Knowledge and unite them with the Self. (SW-UPA II 4)
Mantra 5 yuje vāṃ brahma pūrvyaṃ namobhir vi śloka etu pathyeva sūreḥ / *śṛṇvanti viśve amṛtasya putrā* ā ye dhāmāni diviyāni tasthuḥ // 2.5 // O senses and O deities who favor them! Through salutations I unite myself with the eternal Brahman, who is your source. Let this prayer sung by me, who follow the right path of the Sun, go forth in all directions. May the sons of the Immortal, who occupy celestial positions, hear it! This is one of the important Mantras of this Upanishad as it refers to the entire human race as ‘amritasya putrah’ - sons of immortality showcasing all the humans as divine. Swami Vivekananda elaborated this Mantra and its ideas at the Parliament of Religions held in 1893 at Chicago. This Mantra is important for another reason also as it blends the concepts of bhakti- devotion and jnana - knowledge which is the unique feature of this Upanishad as stated earlier. This Mantra describes the final stage of evolution of the seeker. This final stage is Samadhi and the coming down to the relative plane of existence after Samadhi. Samadhi is the state where the seeker’s absorption in Brahman is complete by following the right path of Knowledge. The seeker salutes the sense organs and their presiding deities by whose grace he is able to concentrate and attain Brahman. It is because of the tranquility of mind and organs he could experience Brahmic Consciousness which would have been impossible had there been no such stillness. (State of sthitha prajna in the language of Bhagavad Gita). With that tranquility the seeker now feels that the whole empirical universe is the manifestation of Brahman. No longer would the mind, senses, the individual and the phenomenal world remain as separate existence. Hence the tranquility of mind and senses is the golden path which the seeker travels from the beginning of sadhana till its end. In the beginning stage the seeker realizes the oneness or the immanence of God because of his feeling of bhakti and when his mind and senses become completely calm he sees the transcendental aspect of God i.e. goes beyond names and forms through jnana. It should not be overlooked that in both these stages tranquility of mind and senses is a fundamental requisite of Sadhana. Now the stage after Samadhi is taken up. At this stage the seeker feels everything in the world as Divine. Hence he says “let this truth be known to all the amritasya putrah, all the sons of immortality and spread in the four corners of the world; let this hymn in the form of prayer of what I have realized become intense and spread over the whole world”. 1 Shrinwantu vishwe amritasya putra Arya dhamani divyani thasthu 2 Vedam ayetam purusham mahantam aditya varanam tamasa parasthath 3 Tvameva vidhithva atimrityu methi, nanyah pantha vidyathe ayanaya 4 Yashchayamasmin akashe tejo maya, amrit maya purushah sarvani bhu 5 Etatcgheyam nityame mathwasamastham, nadhahparam vedita vyamhikinchit 6 sang pratheyna vishayo gyana triptah, kritatmanu hritaraga prashantah -From the Svetasvatara Upanishad. Shrinwantu Vishwe Amritasya Putra- these verses tell us that humans are not sinful creatures and can become immortal through their deeds, hence amritasya putra… and to do so people have to embrace knowledge and and consider everything in the universe as one; the path to enlightenment and Brahma(everything). The immutable Reality is unperceived and unfelt, and the apparition seems to give us life, light and joy. The sole purpose of the Upanishad teaching is to disentangle man from the chain of samsara, to show him the way to the Glorious Light that shines within himself. Man is not a sinful mortal creature in truth; the Upanishad calls him “son of the Immortal”— amritasya putra. But he can know himself only through sacrificing himself. The highest sacrifice is the offering of the self to the Absolute. The greatest yoga is the sinking of the self into unity with the Absolute, by denying the separate, and asserting the One. “उत्तिष्ठ जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान् निबोधत । क्षुरस्य धारा निशिता दरत्यया दुर्गं पथस्तत्कवयो वदन्ति।।“ “uttiṣṭhata jāgrata prāpya varānnibodhata | kṣurasya dhārā niśitā duratyayā durgaṁ pathastatkavayo vadanti ||” Arise, Awake from the deep sleep of ignorance! Approach the Great Beings to learn and know the Brahman. The Sages say that the path to the knowledge of Brahman, hard to traverse, difficult of going is that path, like the sharp edge of a razor. “śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putrā ā ye dhāmāni divyāni tasthuḥ ” “शृण्वन्तु विश्वे अमृतस्य पुत्रा आ ये धामानि दिव्यानि तस्थुः ” (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad, Chapter II, Verse 5) The Upanishads of ancient Bharat - India glorify human beings as “Children of Immortality”. शृण्वन्तु/ śṛṇvantu = Listen/hear, बिश्वे/ viśve = in the world, अमृतस्य/Amritasya = of Immortality, पुत्रा/Putra = Children. Meaning: “Listen, O the Children of Immortality or Immortal Bliss”. May you be well established in your Divine goals! O eternal children of Prajapati (The Supreme)! In the Vedic tradition, it was believed, it is not man but it is his body that dies, man never dies. He is Immortal; he is the “Son of Immortality”. Here many might be thinking the connectivity of these wrt the self esteem demanded by the preceptor above. There is a kannadasan verse sung by MGR; UNNAYARINSDAAL…” It was then invoking only believe in yourself means EGO,. END. No sir. How ever hard you focus yorself, you raise your fear and anxiety only. Why? You must get it; you must suceed; only you must win somehow. That is indeed a self belief but also a selfish belief. Success, you make may force yopu to think, its because of your self confidence alone. No sir; it was an accident; or it was a your Karma; but if its your self confidence and try again, in the same path YOU MAY FAIL. I HAD A FRIEND MY NAMESAKE WHO SCORE ALL INDIA RANK 1 AND CHOSE IAS. His Grand father was adoctor in UN. When I congradulated him he said simply: “ I did nothing; my grand pa in june (hardly a couple of months away from civil service exam) trells me I had pais your exam fee along with your signed app (which he did as demanded by grand pa and forgot) ; write or go to hell wasting your time. “ He added, so I went to higginbothams and bought (me too did the same Higgin sold these books a lot than literatures) a few went through and wrote; behold I {he} was all India rank 1. “ If you were to repeat it again, may be I would be all india last too. Mr Sundaram might know him. Why these? Understanding oneself? N\o sir. Things do happen as it happened to me and to many in these forums had happenned who knew conscuiously. All of us then were telling BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. All that crap is nothing but ego only. Unnaiyarindaal is what Raman said as expnding from Swetaswara upanishad. All of us are bodt and soul; by body mortal; by soul immortal; amrtasya putras; Upanishad demands be awake and get things done through belied in your self (soul) . A report I read recently says “Many people look in the mirror and see someone they don’t like very much. They see faults, flaws and failures. They feel shame, embarrassment and maybe even anger toward themselves…Deep down we’ve all constructed an idea of who we ‘should’ be: how we should look, act, think, feel and be regarded by others.” If this report is indeed true, it is sad. My heart goes out to those who suffer thus. Even highly confident and successful people suffer from a sense of low esteem . A sense of inadequacy about oneself not only robs one of happiness but outright grants only misery. Our scriptural teachings nip this misery in the bud. They exhort us as “Listen, O children of Selfless Love!”, “srunvantu amrutasya putraah!”. We are embodiments of Love itself. We are not sinners. We are not deficient in any way. Each one of us is unique. And perfect in this uniqueness. I must have faith in this call of the vedas. I must understand this Truth, believe in it and conduct myself as a spark of Love itself. Have faith in your-self which alone will take you to suceed in everyhthing on thos earth as well as in the heaven one day in future; so nourish the body.
