Dear friends, Today my posting is about Ramanathaswamy temple atTirunarayur near Nachiar kovil in Kumbakonam District of Tamilnadu, where thereis separate sanctum for Lord Saturn. The specialty of this Saturn is that he is with his two consortsJeshta Devi and Mantha Devi in standing posture. His two sons Mandi and Gulikanare also sitting below them. Probably this may bethe only temple where Saturn is with his consorts and children. This temple isa remedy temple for malefic effects of Saturn, Mandi and Gulikan. Hope a divine reading . Gopalakrishnan 23-4-2025 Introduction The temple is called Ramanathaswami at Thirunarayur (NachiarKovil) , near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Within this temple there is yetanother small temple for specifically meant for Shani Baghavan and his family.At the main temple the presidingdeity is Lord Shiva, who is worshiped here as Ramanathaswamy.Goddess Parvati, his consort, is depicted as Parvathavarthini. This may be the only temple in India, where Lord Shaneeswara is presentwith his consorts (Manda Devi and Jyeshta Devi) and two sons namely Mandhi andKuligan. He also called as mangala saniswaran. Though a sub-shrine ofthe Ramanathaswami temple in Thirunaraiyur, which is also called as SaneeswararThirukkoil, Saturn’s abodehere has separateDhwajasthambam, Balipeetamand the crow mount in front of it. A lamp with gingely seeds, tied in a new cloth and kept ingingely oil, is lit before him. He likes flowers, dress and other things in blue colour. The sthalavriksham(Tree) is “erukku” and the holy watersource is known as Rama Theertham. Herethe powerful Shanaischara Sloka by Dasaratha, Rama’s father was born. Note : Sanaischara ( pronunciation is Sanaischara, notSaneeswara) Legend Once upon a time theking Dasaratha visited this temple and offered prayer to Lord Saneeswaran toget rid of his Doshas. To prove that there is a King Dasaratha’s idol ispresent here. Devotees generally believe that if they worship the Sani here thepeace and harmony will prevail in families. Legend in detail-According to legend when KingDasaratha ruled the entire world, Saturn was to pass through Rohini star afterstaying in Krithigai, on one occasion. Sage Vasishtaand others told Dasaratha that if Saturn did so it would spell doom for theworld. There would be famine everywhere for 12 years and animals andhuman beings would be put to much hardship. He requested Dasaratha to preventit. Dasaratha immediately got into his fast-moving chariot, carrying all Divineweapons and reached the star, Rohini. He saw Saturn moving in his golden chariot towards Rohiniand sent the Divine weapons including the " Samhara Asthram " towardshim. Saturn, laughing at the king's futile attempts, told him thatHe could destroy anybody by His mere look. The powers that Dasaratha had got throughsevere penance, austerity and Divine grace prevented Saturn from eliminatinghim. Dasaratha requestedSaturn not to pass through Rohini and thus spare the world from experiencingfamine for 12 years. Saturn was immensely pleased with the king's concern for thewelfare of his subjects and grantedthe two requests. He also told him that if he visited Thirunaraiyur and bathedin the tank there he would appear before him. Dasaratha did accordingly andSaturn appeared before him. As Thirunaraiyur is the place where He appeared before Dasaratha, it is consideredto be an important place of Saturn worship. It is said that in no otherplace, including the more famous Thirunallar temple, is He worshipped alongwith his two wives, Mandhadevi and Jyeshtadevi (also known as Neeladevi) and his two sons, Maandhiand Kuligan. According tothe sthalapuranam, Lord Rama and Anjaneya, during their return from Lanka toAyodhya, visited this place. Deities India's only temple known as Shri Parvathavarthini UdanuraiShri Ramaligaswamy and Mangala Saneeswarar temple. The Sani Bhagavan along withHis 2 wives and 2 Sons as a Family in a separate sanctum. WorshippingSaneeswarar will reduce the malefic effects of Saturn. This temple is known asMangala Saneeswarar temple which means Sani resides here with his family isblessing Saturn Main Deity : Ramanatha Swamy. Ambal : Sri Parvathavardhini Ambiga. The presiding deity in the main temple is Ramanathaswami,facing east, and it is considered to be as holy as the one in Rameswaram. Many devoteeswho are unable to visit Rameswaram, make their offerings to the Lord here. The Goddess here, as in Rameswaram, is known asParvathavardhini and Her shrine faces south. Sub deities Medha Dakshinamoorthyis enshrined on the southern side and His idol is one of enchanting beauty. Onthe southwest side is the shrine of Vinayaka while Subramania, with His two Consorts, Valli andDevasena, is worshipped in the shrine on the other side. There are also shrines for Gajalakshmi, Hanumantha Lingam,Annamalaiyar, Brahma,Durgadevi and Chadikeswarar. There is a separate shrine for Navagrahas with the Sun at the centre with his twoConsorts, Ushadevi and Prathyushadevi, which is said to be a rarity. The other eight grahas are found around Sun. Here Subrahmanya with Valli and Devasena was present in oneshrine and also Kartikeya with Valli and Devasena was present in another shrinein the same compound. Though Subrahmanya and Kartikeya are differentphilosophical aspects of the same god, they were present separately.We see suchthings at temples. About Saturn Saturn is said to go round the legendary Meru Parvathameveryday and embrace it. He was born on a Saturday with Rohini as His birthstar. He rides a vehicle pulled by the eagle( My note-not crow?) and carries a bow,an arrow, trishul and gatha in his four hands. He is fond of stotras praising himand the food most liked by Him is rice mixed with gingelly, coconut andjaggery.
