High hopes for Jamaica's first female Prime Minister
// 31/03/2006 // Christine Eke // Copyright © www.blackbritain.co.uk
Jamaica made history yesterday as it swore in its first female Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, during a grand ceremony.
Simpson-Miller previously served in the PNP cabinet as Minsiter for Local Government, Community Development and Sport and has always been a popular member of the ruling People's National Party (PNP) among grassroots supporters.
Simpson-Miller who is now the leader of the PNP has inherited a country with one of the highest crime rates in the world, with 1300 murders committed last year alone.
Former PNP General Secretary and founder of Facilitators for a Better Jamaica in the UK, Sylbourne Sydial told Black Britain:
"Portia will have to be tough, making decisions at the expense of being unpopular because that is what people are looking for."
Sydial, a close associate of Simpson-Miller said that she will probably focus more on poorer communities as poverty is a major cause of crime.
Her election as Prime Minister has been compared to the recent inauguration of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as President of Liberia with observers calling it a new era for women in world governments.
Tessa Sanderson, a former British Olympic champion who maintains close ties with Jamaica told Black Britain:
"The election of a female Prime Minister in Jamaica has been long overdue and all I can say is she is one in a million, internationally she is known and she's so passionate about the country, she will take it far."
