Louis de Pointe du Lac

Louis is the first of the vampires to tell his story to the mortal world. He
was born in 1766, and as a mortal is very wealthy, with a plantation in New
Orleans and seven more in Louisiana. The death of his brother leaves him
stricken with grief. Louis blames himself for his brother's demise, because it
is the result of a fatal fall that takes place just after Louis refuses to sell
any of his assets to raise money for religious work. Interestingly, in the
screen adaptation of Interview With The Vampire, Louis' grief is for his wife
and child, and no mention is made of any brother.
The vampire Lestat comes across Louis a short while later, and is so taken by
his air of sadness and his good looks that he falls in love with him. Louis is
seeking death, but receives instead immortality, when he is made into a vampire
by Lestat in 1791. He is amazed by the powers he has been given and falls in
love with everything around him. Yet, he is unable to come to terms with his
need to kill, and feeds initially on the blood of rats and animals. As time
passes, he comes to hate Lestat for making him what he is.
When Lestat creates Claudia, Louis finds a new focus. Claudia - who is just 5
years old - means the world to him and he showers her with affection. She is
his daughter, bride and mistress, thereby inciting Lestat's jealousy. Louis'
feelings for her run so deep that when she eventually rises up against Lestat,
he does not intervene. He feels it is wrong to destroy their maker, but he
doesn't have the power or the inclination to stop Claudia. He helps Claudia to
dispose of Lestat's body and burns Lestat when he later returns.
Louis and Claudia then set off on a sort of grand tour of Europe in search of
other vampires. In Paris they enounter Armand and the Theatre des Vampires,
with disasterous consequences. Louis is strongly attracted to Armand, but is so
overcome by grief when the Paris vampires destroy Claudia that he leaves Paris
and becomes a recluse.
In the twentieth century, Louis tells the story of his life to a young reporter
called Daniel. Daniel then asks him for the dark gift. Louis is so frustrated
by what he sees as his failure to communicate the tragedy of the vampire state
that he bites the young reporter and leaves him unconscious.
When Lestat becomes a rock star, Louis seeks him out to try and dissuade him
from holding his ill-fated concert. He fails in this design, but because he
still cares for Lestat, agrees to accompany him to the concert. His feelings
for Lestat are, of course, reciprocated and it is this that saves him Akasha's
rampage.
When Lestat switches bodies with James Raglan, he comes to Louis asking to be
made into a vampire again. Louis refuses this request, because for him becoming
human again is the best thing that could happen to someone. He cannot bear to
pass on the dark gift to anyone ever again. When Lestat is driven mad by his
misery at his experiences with Memnoch, Louis begs Maharet not to nail him up
in a windowless room. He visits Lestat on a regular basis during his captivity
and takes Wyken de Wilde's books back to his townhouse.
Louis is the most human of all the vampires. He was never able to explore his
vampire identity and as a result, his memories are often distorted. He is an
intellectual, who prefers contemplation to action and always thinks before he
acts. In spite of his compassionate nature, Louis sheds more innocent blood
than other vampires, because he is unable to distinguish good people from
evildoers.
