Hi again, problem now sorted. It was my fault as suspected. When I installed XP Pro I did all the service pack updates etc but went straight to .Net 4 which was a mistake. I was under the impression that by installing the latest .Net framework that would cover all the previous releases as well. To correct this I uninstalled all the .Net stuff I could. Not .Net 1.0 and relevant service packs as this installed with the operating system. I then installed .Net 2.0, SP1, SP2 and so on which I think is basically a constant upgrade but all in order and not jumping to the last version first. I let windows update automatically run the updates using the custom option to select only the updates relevant to the .Net level I had achieved at that point. I also restarted the machine at every stage to be on the safe side. Once I had .Net 3.5 installed Therion fired up, yahoo. Also Pocket Topo will not run without .Net 2.0 With hindsight this now seems pretty obvious; the moral of the story is "don't rush though long installs" do it once, do it right.

It turned out in that case that service pack 3 had not been installed. So that is one thing to check.
