I was getting some strange paper sizes when I was using predefined
variable as in the example on page 76 of the thbook
\def\maplayout{
\legendbox{0}{100}{NW}{\northarrow}
\legendbox{100}{100}{W}{\the\thversion}
}
If you do this the map pdf almost doubles in width. It appears that this
happens for most of the variables that I tried \cavename, \copyrights,
\explotitle,
A bit of playing around and it appear that when the variable is placed
it is the same width as the page of the map, so if you put it on the
right hand side the page almost doubles in width.
This appears to me to be a bug, but it might just my lack of knowledge
of how to use it.
Setting \legendwidth or legend-width does not seem to change the behaviour.
