Some on this board have questioned how to make a live action Wonder Woman movie
that is interesting.  Simple, take the script from the recent WW animated movie
and add 30 minutes.

The basic plot is the standard WW origin story with some action added in to
keep things interesting.  Here’s what you can get from the trailer or the back
of the DVD – no real spoilers.  Several thousands of years ago, Ares (God of
War) started a war with Themyscira.  The women warriors were able to defeat
Ares, but only after all the males were killed.  Hera forbids the now Amazons
from killing Ares, but they are allowed to imprison him.  Through a series of
events, Col. Steve Trevor crashes on the hidden island and there is a contest
to see who is best suited to take him back to America.  Ares is able to use the
contest as a distraction to escape; thus adding to WW’s mission.

The movie is less than 80 minutes and is rated PG-13 – and with reason.  There
are stabbings, amputations, and beheadings galore!  For the live action, they
just need to get Zack Snyder do the fight scenes and they are set – just keep
him away from the talking character parts.  While any live action WW wouldn’t
be as ‘dark’ as The Dark Knight, it would allow DC to do a more ‘realistic’
film than they could with a Superman movie.  WW is a warrior, i.e. she is ok
with killin’ people who need killin’.

They could even use some of the voice actors as the same characters in a live
action.  The voice acting was pretty good all-around with the definite
highlight being Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor.  For the live action movie, he
is a shoo-in. His timing and characterization is perfect.  Rosario Dawson does
have the comic book look of Artemas, but she could definitely pull of being any
Amazon.  While Kerri (Felicity) Russell couldn’t be a live action WW, her voice
acting was surprising good.  She was able to deliver WW’s lines in a believable
way.

WW’s characterization was spot-on for an origin story.  She was created after
the war; so, she has never seen a man.  Combine that with living on an isolated
island for thousands of years, yeah, she would be kind of socially awkward in
current day America.  Her view of ‘mans’ world’ is distorted, but
understandably so.  Combine that with her warrior upbringing and you get some
pretty funny line.  There is a scene where she mentors a little girl about how
to sword fight when the boys wouldn’t let her play that is hilarious.  There
are other lines with Steve in the magic lasso telling how he really feels about
WW that are instant classics – they also lead to the PG-13 rating.

While the plot isn’t super complex, it is sufficient enough for an origin
story, and it’s really more the story anyway.  What I mean is, while Batman,
and Superman to a lesser degree, don’t need to have romantic interest in the
story (those are often the weaker parts), WW does work better with Steve, at
least in the origin.  It’s kind of like the romantic/action duo shows such as
Bones, X-Files, Castle (with Nathan Fillion).  The chemistry between the
characters is what makes story.  WW would actually be a lot like Temperance in
Bones in ways of social awkwardness.  They both have these preconceived notions
of how things should and don’t understand why things don’t actually fit into
their ideas.

Without getting into spoilers, there could have been some more backstory and
character motivation, but I think they were artificially constrained by to less
than 80 minutes.  In a live action, they could definitely beef up those areas
up.

As for who should play WW in a live action version:  Even though she is
immortal, she should look younger than her mom, Hypolita.  Angelina Jolie 5-7
years ago would have worked great.  Not only did she have the look, but she
could have brought great gravitas to role.  Now though, she looks too much
like, wow this is going to sound bad, a mature woman.  Still super hot, but WW
in an origin story needs to be younger.  It think now she wouldn’t make a great
Hypolita.  Megan Fox has the look (with a push-up), but I don’t think she has
the acting chops to make WW as, well, intimidating as she needs to be.

In closing, Todd, Holly and I really enjoyed the animated movie, much more than
any of us thought we would, and it makes me hopeful that a WW live action could
work.  Overall, I’d say I enjoyed it more than JLA: New Frontier,
Superman/Doomsday, Batman: Gotham Nights, and Hulk vs.

If anyone would like to start a new thread with spoilers, I’d be happy to
discuss more.

P.S.  Jon and/or Shag, with some editing and thought, this might work
on either the TUG or OuaG site, if either of you are interested.
