Hi Matt

When I've had to do this, I've not interacted with Thinking Sphinx/Sphinx, as 
there's usually one column in particular I want to use for autocompletes (e.g.: 
tag names), and so I just go straight to that table, or cache the more common 
values and use those. As for the front-end, that's completely up to you - 
jquery plugins sounds like a good place to start.
