There's a fix for this in recent commits - you can use them via this in your
Gemfile:
gem 'thinking-sphinx', '~> 3.0.4',
:git => 'git://github.com/pat/thinking-sphinx.git',
:branch => 'master',
:ref => '56a19733fa'
