Lowering the brightness and applying Fn/F3 whenever the machine is not being
used is a good way to prolong the inevitable backlight failure.

The reason why I'm not saying to turn the machine off is GPU detachment that
T4x machines-especially early ones like yours-are prone to, and the number of
heating/cooling cycles affects solder joints which connect it to the board.

On a good note, an entire T4x 14" SXGA+ LCD assembly in good condition can be
had for far less than $100 shipped nowadays...

Cheers,

George

Display lifetime, continued.
I should have mentioned that this is a T40p. Will it fade away gradually or
suddenly become unusable? Based on hours, hours x brightness, or on/off
cycles?
This has been a good machine, it's at 2x the normal obsolescence time for a
notebook and is still useful. The lower chassis should have had a metal
reinforcing from though, it's quite flexy.

btw, an earlier issue I had with screen flickering turned out to be software.
Web browsers loading multiple tabs would cause either the right or left of the
desktop icons buttons to flicker, and at first only Opera would do this. The
backlight was not affected. It certainly looked like a hardware problem until I
saw it was consistently reproducibly via software.

"Laurence" <tahiti444-think...@yahoo.com>All of the T4_ series are pretty good
about such things... We have had T42
and T43 in the Himalays, Honduras, Alaska, and New Zealand.

The T41 has more problems with back light and inverter... We have yet to
see the problem in a T42 or T43...

But in humid climates, they are more susceptible to problems, and our shops
are in New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado where the air is dry... so we
do not see as many failures as one might see in Florida, Massachussets,
Oregon, etc.

All the same, the T_ series holds up much better than any other brand,
except some of the high end Dells.

Is there anything, apart from a really good chocolate cream pie
and receiving a large unexpected check in the mail, to beat living among
the awakenings of a lovely sunrise or the long shadows of a lazy sunset?
