On the topic of email, my advice...
1) register your own domain name (costs about $8/year)
2) sign up for the 'standard edition' of Google Apps ($0/year):
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html
3) following Google's instructions, update your domain's DNS records to
point to Google's server
And now you have a pretty much perfect email solution -- you can create
mailboxes, use any email client, use Google's web-based interface, and
benefit from a great spam filter -- all at next to zero cost.
