Registration with a registrar (I use domaindiscover.com) who offers forwarding.

An additional benefit, not mentioned yet (unless I missed it) is unlimited
email addresses. I have mine set up with a global forwarder, and use
site-specific email addresses: [email protected] for United Airlines, for
example. That way I can tell if someone gets hacked or sells me out, and then
blackhole that address and change to a new one (and yes, this happened with
United, so that address has been blackholed). Filters mark or move addresses I
want to single out.

The alternative way is to NOT use a global forwarder, but to set up specific
forwards for, say, [email protected]. That works too, though obviously it's more
work.

Some ISPs also support an email name prefix or suffix, so if you're
[email protected], [email protected] will go to joe's inbox. This also lets you use
filters to manage those notes

Someone is about to reply saying, "But SPAM...!" Yes, I get my share of spam; I
use a three-level filtering approach (ISP marks things THEY think are spam; K9
(Bayesian, free) marks things IT thinks are spam; Outlook mismarks ;-) things
it thinks are spam. I almost never get false positives and I filter the spam
into another folder, check it a couple of times a day. (I also keep the last
year or so in case I suspect I missed a false positive.)
