I can second this. I've been running a full-blown (as in EVERYTHING
installed) version of Debian, with KDE, for years. Sometimes, the sound
has worked, mostly it hasn't. Right now, it doesn't, but I think it has
something to do with very low level mapping of devices by the kernel.

I have had so many irreproducible symptoms after various changes that
I've given up. For a while, module cs_snd4231 worked with some
hardwired addresses in the modutils config file, but now it doesn't.
Alsaconf wants to install the cs_snd4232, which seems to see the device
(kmix actually has some settings to configure) but no sound comes out.
With cs_snd4231, no mixer. The kmix window (with cs_snd4232) claims
it's a 4236 device, but I think 4236 is blacklisted as it causes known
problems. Maybe one day I'll get motivated to re-visit this issue, but
in the meantime, there's quite a bit written on the web about the 600E
sound devices and how to make them work under linux.
http://www.linux-laptop.net is a good place to start. I'd be interested
if someone gets this to work.
