You might want to start with ERUNT [
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ ], which will schedule
automatic registry back ups and its component NTREGOPT will minimize the
registry size; physically defragment registry files with Sysinternals
PageDefrag [ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx].

If you need to clean the Registry, it's usually better to avoid those
utilities which *automatically* remove what they decide is extraneous and
instead use one which (1) lists all the potentially bad entries, (2) lets
you select entries to be removed individually, and (3) automatically backs
up the registry so that erroneous deletions can be corrected. Reviewing
each of the entries which is a candidate for removal can be a lengthy and
tedious process, but will allow you to decide if the entry can be safely
removed. Numerous freeware reg cleaner-editor tools are available, e. g.,
EasyCleaner 2.0.6 by ToniArts; RegSeeker 1.55 by Hoverdesk; Lexun RegScrubXP
3.25; RegCleaner 4.3 [last freeware version; now part of payware jv16
PowerTools]; other editors [but not cleaners, which try to identify registry
"junk"] include RegistrarLite by Resplendence; O&O Reg Editor; Vilma
Registry Explorer.

Even if you know what you're doing, be careful with these. A conservative,
safety first policy will probably save much grief and extra "undo" work; for
example, remove only entries which refer to software you are certain is no
longer valid. Leaving keys about which you are in doubt consumes little
additional space and can prevent the trouble of accidentally or unknowingly
disabling wanted software. In other words, it is not the tool which is
"non-destructive and unlikely to introduce issues" but YOUR method of use.

Be careful and good luck.
