Many many thanks to all that replied, I admit I was a bit discouraged at how
much trouble it seemed it would be to partition up this new T500 hard drive.

Nevertheless, I received the restore cd's the other day, went through the
way too lengthy process of it all without a hitch.

Once I had finished and everthing was up and running, I figured what the
'hey' since I had the factory restore disks now in hand, I'd try Partition
Magic again because I recalled, the first time I used it, and upon running
it the first time, PM reported some error "error in the length of partition
'whatever', which Ive seen before and allowed PM to fix it. That was
evidentally what fouled the hard drive.

Anyway, upon restoring the system, and trying Partition Magic again, I
didn't receive any errors about the length of the partitions and PM
partitioned the drive as expected.

I will note, the CD's that were supposedly to place everything back to "as
new" condition, did not. The original setup from the factory included a
trial period of MS Office 2007, the restore CD's did not! (which is a good
thing). Point is, It would appear the hdd image from the factory may be
snafued, the image from the CD's, 'OK'.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback on the issue.

David

Subject: [Thinkpad] Partition during re-image using Lenovo restore disks

Well, got the new T500 with XP Pro in the other day. Deleted all the
unnecessary junk (ie Trial version of MSO 2007).

Set out to partition the hard drive (as many, many times in the past, using
Power Quest Partition Magic 8.0 for XP). And PM or something corrupted the
boot record "error: NTLDR is missing"

Lenovo support says the HDD must be re-imaged and they are sending out the
"restore" or "recovery" disks.

Question is... is there a point during this restore process where I can
specify my desired partitioning? Lenovo says no, he didn't think so.
Anyone know different? I'm afraid to try Partition Magic again, hate to buy
another product I may only use once/twice.

Thanks in advance,

David
