You could try using TightVNC http://www.tightvnc.com/
TightVNC is a program to allow remote viewing/controlling of
desktops, protected by password access and, under linux, encrypted
transfer. It can use specific ports that you would have to open in your
firewall/router, but it can also work using HTTP.
It also has a Transfer Files function that would quite likely satisfy
your needs.
As for online file storage services, I am very happy with Dropbox
http://dropbox.com
It allows for up to 2Gb free storage (you can get more if you refer
additional users). Users can create folders to be shared only thru
invitation, or can put their files in a "public" folder.
Please email me off the list if you need more info on these options.

I strongly suggest avoiding remote file sharing as you describe. There are
lots of security risks in doing that (making your PC's drive available to the
Internet). Instead, either burn his files to DVD and mail it to him, buy a
cheap external HD to transfer the files to (as low as $60 - see buy.com) and
have him pay you for it, or consider an online file storage service. One
last option - tell your friend to buy a $10 USB-to-HD cable
(http://www.buy.com/prod/usb-2-0-to-sata-ide-hard-drive-cable-adapter-converter/q/loc/101/213484248.html)
and send him the drive back so he can attach it externally to his own
computer.

My friend's T40 crashed and I took the machine to IBM
but it is non-repairable. He wants to access his files
(he lives in another city) and I've put his HDD in my
drive tray on my T43 where it appears as Drive L which
I've set to share in WXP. But I can't figure out how to
make it as a shared folder on his (remote) computer so he
can transfer the files by accessing my external IP address.
I tried NATting my local T43's local IP address to Port 9000
on my external IP address but that doesn't seem to let him
in. Please tell me what to do or what to read. Googling
"remote file access" brings up a lot of proprietary
solutions which don't seem to be right for our requirement
tks for all help jeffrey race
