Your problem could be with the cable you bought. There are many posts
about this over on thinkpads.com - and I think some on this list also.
Apparently not all DP to HDMI cables are capable of transmitting audio.
No settings needed to be changed on the X220 to get audio on the output
device with the cable that I purchased on Ebay, but I did contact the
seller prior to purchase for assurance that it was capable of digital
audio/video interconnect.

So I have a DP-to-HDMI cable I got on Amazon. Hooked it up to my X220
and a Sony TV. Picture is great playing a DVD (from Windows Media
Player), but sound is only coming out of the computer. Windows 7,
64bit.
I looked under Control Panel> Sound and saw two devices, "Speakers"
and something related to DisplayPort (don't have it hooked up now,
maybe it said a Sony TV). But no matter what I did, I couldn't get the
sound to come out of the DP/HDMI.
I see now there's a "set default" choice but I don't really want to
change the DP to the default output, do I? I will if I have to.
How would I tell the computer to pump the sound out the DisplayPort
instead?
Thanks!
