IE has a problem managing its cache. It defaults to something ridiculous -- typically 1GB, if memory servers -- and once the files in it pass some point, it loses the ability to manage it effectively. Symptoms include what you're seeing, as well as the BACK button causing "This page cannot be displayed", even when it's something as prosaic as a Google result. I always set the IE cache as LOW as it can go (I think that's 8MB these days) and that avoids the problem.
