Does anyone object to me committing this? It has been available for comment for
quite some time, and there aren't any real outstanding bugs in the
implementation. I believe it is ready to be used, and that improvements can be
made in separate tickets after this initial issue is committed. If no one
chimes in to the contrary, I will commit this patch tomorrow evening.
