I think he means dynamic bookmarks... self-updating to show the 5 most used locations. Apparently Thunar 1.0 will have an upgraded extensions system, which will allow for new views - I'm not sure if this will also affect the sidebar.
With regards to the suggestion itself, how would you find out which directories are the most used? You could use the Recent Documents system but not all applications use it (although that's not a good reason for thunar not to use it); alternatively you could monitor which folders are visited by frequency (weighted by the length of time spent in that folder?) over the course of a week. There would also be an issue with the naming of directories. My folder names tend to be short, and have little meaning on their own, e.g. src, which would be the sub-directory of a programming project I'm working on - showing me that the thee most used folders on my system are all called 'src' isn't very helpful: I would need the full path, and that needs to be fitted into the GUI.
