It could well be because you're using Linux. The default port numbers are 110 for POP and 25 for SMTP, but Linux reserves port numbers below 1024 for system use. You need to choose two numbers above 1024 for the port numbers. This has to be done both in the Webmail Add-ons options and the server settings for the accounts. The port numbers used in the add-on options and the account setting must match. PS. Both Google and Hotmail now offer free POP access without any need for the webmail extensions. Is there any reason why you can't use this?
