The xpi file is a renamed zip file. I don't use a MAC myself, but I've 
seen this question before, apparently by default the MAC doesn't just 
unzip the containing file, it also unzips the contained xpi file. I'm 
not sure of the correct MAC terminology, but you have to use a command 
line interface to just unzip one level to the xpi file without also 
unzipping the xpi.
