Per other postings to this group, the change in maildotcom UI works with the latest AOL add-on.
All I had to do was download the AOL add-on, then start my maildotcom profile, disable the maildotcom add-on and restart Thunderbird. Once restarted, I installed the AOL add-on add then clicked on the add- on "Option" button, switched to "Domains" and added the "email.com" (which I use) and "mail.com" (just in case) domains. Once completed was able download my e-mail without further problems.
