Thanks for the reply. In the meantime I have found a solution for anyone else that may be interested. It is a gateway called DavMail Gateway --- http://davmail.sourceforge.net/
This can run standalone on your PC alongside your email client, or can be put on a separate server and act as a gateway for multiple clients. You can use the gateway to access OWA via POP3 or IMAP, It's unfortunate that you have to run an extra service, but it will suffice until WebMail-OWA has been updated or Exchange access has been built-in to Thunderbird.
