As others above have made clear you need to use the standard unsecured ports for the Webmail add-ons (port 110 for POP and port 25 for SMTP). The Webmail add-on connections between Thunderbird and itself and these ports are entirely inside your own computer (that is what localhost means) so secure connections have no meaning or value inside your computer.
The Webmail add-ons connect to the Webmail services (Yahoo, Hotmail GMail etc) using normal http connections just as you would if you logged into them from the Web. Essentially these add-ons log on to the mail systems as you would and then screen scrape the information and convert the message data from those connections to/from the POP/SMTP streams that Thunderbird understands.
