I'm still experiencing the following issues: 1. The messages remain unread on the server 2. Replying of Forwarding messages including formatted text doesn't work (negative vibes, check message and try again). Cutting and paste the text as unformatted works fine. 3. The special Italian characters ò à ù ì è é are sent as ò à ù ì è é so they are unreadable when received. Sending the same using a Gmail account works fine. So I don't think it is a Thunderbird setting.
