#1047: Undo #1046 to make route patterns mandatory again

Turns out #1046 wasn't such a no-brainer. People assume that a
{{{<route>}}} without a {{{pattern}}} won't do any matching, but that's of
course not the case. To eliminate this confusion, and to leave the option
of implementing such a behavior in the future, we should revert [3845]
again
