Indeed, the source code is often the best reference. Looking at plugins 
with similar functionality is usually a good start.

As for the [tw] vs. [twdev] issue, it's worth pointing to the original 
thread:

(There were also various IRC conversations following this.)

Personally, while I think low-level issues* should ideally be discussed 
on [twdev], I don't really care too much since I'm active on both groups 
anyway.
But there are those who only follow [twdev], and thus don't even get a 
chance to voice their opinion here - not to mention they're usually the 
ones with the skills necessary to respond to certain questions.

Either way, we're way off-topic...
