I agree, sort of. BUT everything depends on USE CASES. 

In the specific use case (which I neglected to spell out!)---it is for 
standard novels. The primary order for scholars would be "vol-chap-para". 

For the use case what *is* needed is bookmarking and cross-links. The more 
complex scenario you suggest (I think) is unneeded. 

I'm open to suggestions. But I'd need top see the final *added value* for 
the purpose of semantic analysis of sequential long texts.

Really what is needed, IMO, is a "*TW Data Design Clinic*" to advise on 
such issues interactively, case-by-case.

Thoughts. Maybe fantasies. 
But its good to talk.
