I'm looking for details about how the refresh and force attributes work in HTML templates.

You might have better luck asking on the dev group:

I didn't subscribe there, by now...

FWIW, there's a brief overview here:
    http://tiddlywiki.org/wiki/Extended_Attributes
Now I see it, I need to read carefully all the search results, sorry.

The HTML Templates, first of all PageTemplate, have an important role in
the customization of the page, so I think it's important to know all the
details about them.

You might wanna trace the source (inevitably), starting from main's notifications initialization:
http://trac.tiddlywiki.org/browser/Trunk/core/js/main.js?rev=11296#L38
http://trac.tiddlywiki.org/browser/Trunk/core/js/Refresh.js

Do you have any specific use case?

I was trying to understand how the refresh works, but I got a bit lost
in the source. The refreshElements function is complicated to follow.

I can see that the refresh attribute value can have assigned one of the
four refresher values: "link", "tiddler", "content" and "macro" but
beyond there I am confused.

thank you
