If you have an image and a thumbnail of it, you use the bracket notation to show the thumbnail image and make it a clickable to show the larger image or to show a document or something...
You have to make the images and then thumbnails yourself first though.... I don't know of any plugin or anything that would just pull images from a pdf or doc file for example...
