I got that to work although I notice that altering the day 

eg. <$list filter="[field:created/^20140(2|3*01*)/]"> 

doesn't appear to make any difference 

so <$list filter="[field:created/^20140(2|201)/]"> 

should just produce results for the 1st Feb 2014 but instead it produces 
results for the whole month.
