I created three original system tiddlers -- *$:/_type/lectures* and two
others with the same naming convention. I tagged all my main content
tiddlers to one or another of these three system tiddlers, and I
successfully used the system tiddlers to populate a drop-down menu
containing three tabs for the three corresponding categories.

My only question is, *how can I hide the presence of the system tiddlers as
tags*? I don't want to see "$:/_type/lectures" when I look at a Lecture
tiddler. Naturally, this isn't a project-breaking problem, but if I can't
hide the tags, then I'll change my hypertext design to use the three
categories as ordinary tags. I was trying to create a categorical system
separate from the tagging system, sort of like how WordPress posts can have
both categories and tags.
