Normally the sidebar width should be fixed and the main tiddler section (river?) take the rest of the width and this is the case with my tiddly.html when viewed in a browser. However, as soon as it's opened in TiddlyDesktop it's the other way around: the main section is fixed and the sidebar takes the rest. I have not fiddled with the default theme and have tried other themes to no avail.
