Can you elaborate? It would be helpful to know your use case in order to
fully understand your suggestion.

It might be worth noting that the distinction between view and edit mode
isn't always clear - what if the ViewTemplate contains an input field,
is that still considered view mode?

I guess that these days, you'd ideally rely on jQuery for this - though
I'm not sure to what extent there might be legacy issues and whatnot.
