Can you elaborate? It would be helpful to know your use case in order to fully understand your suggestion. It might be worth noting that the distinction between view and edit mode isn't always clear - what if the ViewTemplate contains an input field, is that still considered view mode? > Secondly, wouldn't it be rather useful to turn the last part of it > into a global helper function?
