the content of button widgets to ignore any wikitext within the button?

That would make the button widget behave differently than all the other
widgets. Widgets are parsed just like HTML elements, and just as you can
put one HTML tag inside another, you can put one widget inside another.

The ability to have wikitext inside a button is crucial to the translation
mechanism. We have buttons like this:

<$button>
{{buttoncaption}}
</$button>
