They should have used --id or similar. (data-id would tread on author 
territory so that's no good).

Yep. I got into a tussle with one of the spec writers over some of the 
wording around datalist and options -- forgotten the exact details it's 
been so long, but it was some inconsistency that bugged the hell outta me.
