DRC, I'll have to confess to having a Homer Simpson moment on this one. You are correct as to the behavior and I was incorrect. What I was doing was using switchdesk from the user account 'Mike' and NOT from root. Once I ran switchdesk from root, then the .Xclients and .Xclients-default files were created and everything works now correctly for root. I'll restate that I like the way you can now easily control a desktop for local and remote use via VNC.
