I see that with V2 of osm2pgsql that things have changed.
I think I should use
osm2pgsql --append -r xml -s -C 300 --output flex --style
/storage/tom/Downloads/software/openstreetmap-carto/openstreetmap-carto-flex.lua
-P 5435 -d gis -
