...Just a thought... Those long slide switches (plastic sliders with gold leafs that make contact with pads on the divider board) can cause your symptom also. In some cases a metal leaf contact breaks. In other cases the slider grease turns "gummy", preventing good contact. For the latter case, you can fix the problem by cleaning-off all the old grease and then replacing it with fresh Lubriplate grease.
