Thanks Scott and others.

Turns out that /FASTDETECT was already in my boot.ini but I had the problem anyway.

Robert's suggestion to use Device Manager to disable the serial mouse worked and I'm in business.

Appreciate the help from everyone.

Yeah, assuming you're running windows, add the /FASTDETECT switch to boot.ini. Details at:
